Where wild horses live in canada. Canadas Wild Horses Wild horses have been a part of the Canadian west for hundreds of years. There are currently wild horses living in the Chilcotin region of British Columbia and parts of Saskatchewan including a population of protected wild horses in the Bronson Forest. Wild horses in western Canada are found primarily in forested areas typically lodgepole pine woodlands interspersed with pockets of dry grassland shrubland and sedge meadows where they feed on a variety of grasses and sedges throughout the year.
Most herds consist of 5-10 animals although smaller and larger groups also occur. Nova Scotias Sable Island has its own genetically unique breed of wild horses. These small pony-like horses have been living on the island since the 1700s and while they were once rounded up and sold leading to near-extinction in the 1950s they are now protected by the Canadian Government in part due to having become a genetically unique group.
Albertas Unique Horses. DNA studies conducted by both the University of Calgary and University of Texas show that our Alberta wild horses are indeed genetically unique. They have DNA related to the draft horse Indigenous ponies and the original Spanish horse.
There are multiple genetics found but these studies show that this blend of genetics is only found in our Alberta wild horses. W5 investigates Canadas controversial practice of flying live horses around the world to be slaughtered for fresh raw horsemeat. The campaign to stop the live horse export has ramped up.

This is a really nice video and highligh. More than 70000 wild horses live on Western rangelands that can support only 27000 animals. Can the government ecologists and advocates find a humane solution for managing them.
Where to View Wild Horses and Burros. This map put together by the AWHC team shows all the wild horse and burro Herd Management Areas HMAs managed by the Bureau of Land Management BLM in the Western United States.
