Herds are found on Ocracoke Island Shackleford Banks Currituck Banks Cedar Island and in the Rachel Carson Estuarine Sanctuary. The largest herds are at Corolla and Shackleford Banks each with roughly 100 horses. The best way to get a close-up look at these majestic animals is to take one of the many guided tours offered here.
Some BLM public lands where horses and burros were found in 1971 are not currently being managed for wild horses and burros for a variety of reasons including conflicts with private land land that was transferred out of BLMs jurisdiction and lands where there were substantial conflicts with other resource values such as the need to protect habitat for endangered or threatened species. The maps below correspond to segments of public lands that are not managed for wild horses. The easiest place to see some of these wild horses is at the north end of Ocracoke Island where the National Park Service maintains a small herd of banker ponies in a large fenced-in range.
